Some poker concepts

This is a hand that happened last night and it looked similar to a hand that was posted on the ITH Forums.

We have this situation: Hero raises or reraises the pot with good cards (in this case ).

I knew you had high cards, I went low and got lucky

“I knew you had high cards, I went low and got lucky“, a maniac on Party Poker

This is what he told me after cracking my aces…

Here is the hand:

Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold’em (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is SB with , .
UTG raises, 5 folds, Hero 3-bets, 1 fold, UTG caps, Hero calls.

Flop: (9 SB) , , (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG caps, Hero calls.

Turn: (8.50 BB) (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero calls.

River: (12.50 BB) (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG caps, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 20.50 BB

Results:
Hero has (straight, ace high).
UTG has (flush, queen high).
Outcome: UTG wins 20.50 BB.

I know my Aces were a 83% favorite preflop and it goes up to 95% on the flop and down to 80% on the turn and of course 0% on the river :).

I know UTG is a maniac, but he his also a really, really bad player. He has played 100% of the hands (approx. 100) since he joined the table. He bets and raises with anything. I have seen him cap the river with J high or Q high more than once. This is why I played it the way I did.

I know that these players will give their money away in the long run… BUT the fact is that he took MY money last night and THAT hurts.

I think that this hand put me on a mild tilt and I should’ve clicked on the “Deal me out” button and wait a couple of hands before continuing to play.

Of course that’s not what I did, because on the next hand, I capped prelfop with … and flopped the nut straight… I had some action from an idiot that flopped two pairs with his . I guess I got unlucky and then lucky… Still, I have to better control my emotions at the poker table…

Tonight’s hilight

My bankroll has been on a wild roller coaster ride in the past week. It went up to +100BB and down to -100BB. I am now in the -100BB part of it.

People are playing crazy hands. I have an example right here. This one ended in a nice way, but it’s not always like that…

Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold’em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with , .
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 1 fold, MP1 calls, 4 folds, SB completes, Hero raises, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls, SB calls.

Flop: (8 SB) , , (4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 raises, MP1 3-bets, SB folds, Hero calls, UTG+1 calls.

Turn: (8.50 BB) (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP1 bets, Hero calls, UTG+1 calls.

River: (11.50 BB) (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets, MP1 raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG+1 calls, MP1 caps, Hero calls, UTG+1 calls.

Final Pot: 23.50 BB

Results below:
Hero has Ks Kc (full house, kings full of sevens).
UTG+1 has Kh Ah (two pair, kings and sevens).
MP1 has 2s 7h (three of a kind, sevens).
Outcome: Hero wins 23.50 BB.

MP1 3-bets the Flop with bottom pair and worst kicker (actually he played the worst hand in Hold’em)! He bets the Turn unimproved with another over card to his bottom pair! I can understand the River action, but man that’s a crazy way to play a hand like that.

UTG+1 plays it passively until the River. He has so he has top pair top kicker (TPTK). Why not raise on the Flop or Turn? Why wait until the River to show aggression? Of course, he was drawing dead to my set, but he can’t know that. He has to protect his TPTK hand. If you want to play it passively, then by all means do it, but don’t bet the River. That’s plain stupid!

Created WRP Cards to display graphical cards in WordPress

I created a plugin to easily display graphical cards in WordPress.
I based it on the ITH forum I frequent. Basically the only thing you need to do to get a card is type a “:” and then the card and it’s suit (example: : Ad will display ).

It is loosely based on Chris Halverson’s pokerhand, but simpler to use in my opinion since you don’t have to embed the cards in tags.

When I have more time on my hands I will make this public.

Missed my post last week

I missed my post last week, but for a good reason. I was out of town for work.

I just stopped playing poker a few moments ago because Party has no connection right now.

Incredible, but I was in a hand with AA… No joke! I wonder if I will loose my investment…

I am doing good in the limit games. I am actually crushing it, but not doing so good in SNGs.

I finish on the bubble way to often. I have to analyze what I am doing wrong.

I am half way into reading Harrington on Holdem vol. 2 – The end game. I read the first book and I can tell you that they are both a great read. Hopefully this will help my SNGs!
