WRP-Cards
Since this is a poker blog, I needed a simple way to display cards in a nice format. I prefer graphical cards like the ones you can find in poker forums instead of text cards.
Since I also have to use the cards on a regular basis, I needed something that would be simple to use. I did not want to have to embed the cards in tags. I think this is just too cumbersome.
I searched for a WordPress plug-in that would do all this, but I did not find what I wanted exactly. So I decided to create my own plug-in: wrp-cards.
I based wrp-cards on the ITH forum I frequent. Basically the only thing you need to do to get a card is type a ‘:’ and then the card and it’s suit (example: :_Ad (without the ‘_’) will display
).
The plug-in is loosely based on Chris Halverson’s pokerhand, but a bit simpler to use since you don’t have to embed the cards in tags.
wrp-cards is free to use and is released under the GNU license.
Example
Note that I am using the 4 color version. There is an option to use normal cards (Diamonds are red and Clubs are black).

Download
Current version: 1.6
Tested upto WordPress 3.x.x (I always run the latest version of wordpress so WRP-Cards will always work with the latest and greatest version of wordpress.
)
Download wrp-cards plug-in
Instructions on how to install the plug-in are in the readme.txt file.
If you use wrp-cards and wish to donate you can do so via Paypal. Thanks!
Version History
Version 1.0
Beta testing
Version 1.1
Initial release version
Version 1.2
Created the 4 color deck
Version 1.3
Added class=”wrp-cards” to the images. With this you can easily control the way the cards are displayed within your CSS stylesheet.
For example, if you wanted to display the cards 35% lower on the line this is what you would use
img.wrp-cards { vertical-align: -35%; }
Version 1.4
Added the possibility to display a “backcard”. You just have to use the code
to display it. This was suggested by Tomas from www.blogaloo.com.
Thanks Tomas!
Version 1.5
Modified the Ad.gif and Ad_e.gif. Some spam filter where filtering this image out. I guess it’s because the filter reads Ad.gif and Ad_e.gif as an ad and it’s being filtered out.
I patched it non elegantly, I changed the Ad.gif and Ad_e.gif to xyz.gif and xyz_e.gif. It’s not pretty, but it works…
I should have rolled out that patch a while ago…
Thanks Nside for tinkering with it and letting me know what was happening.
Version 1.6
The path to the cards directory was hard coded in the plug-in and this caused problems with people who had their wordpress located somewhere else than the root dir.
Version 1.6 now uses WP_PLUGIN_URL to determine the location of the cards.

[...] My first problem is that I like to post about poker and I like this neat plugin that creates little playing cards for me to use in my posts. So, instead of saying something like: [...]
Hey Fumseck, thanks for releasing wrp-cards to the poker blogging community. I just added it to my blog site earlier today. So far it works great.
[...] I probably should have been able to take the top spot, but a combination of three things broke me down: 1) I need more practice at 3-way Hold ‘Em, 2) I got rivered, against significant odds, on a particularly large hand, and 3) at around 2:30AM I started to get a bit mentally sloppy. I may chat a bit about a couple of these hands at the end of this, just to play with the CardConverter plugin that I got after seeing Roach make a card plugin look so good–although he’s clearly using a different plugin than I am. (He’s using the War Room plugin, which renders cards as images, and I wanted to avoid doing that for RSS readability…

[...] Well, I think the slump that started yesterday evening has finally been slain. Amazingly enough I think played through the day of shitty cards and equally craptacular suckouts fairly patiently. Playing back towards even definetly put a nice spin on the day, I almost recovered my buy in (I’m shy about $11), and next I’ll work on getting back up to my peak on FTP which is about $90 higher than where I’m at now. It’s chump change I know but given how much time I actually have to play right now, I’ll take it. You might not believe this, but I think the slump started when I couldn’t show off my quads. I relate the story to you here since it will give me a chance to check out Fumsek’s wordpress plugin. [...]
Great reading, keep up the great posts.

I’ve renewed my campaign to get someone to create a line-height plugin to help with leading problems created by inline graphics like the cards.
http://www.misterdimbert.com/wordpress/archives/2006/05/wanted-a-wp-plugin-to-control-line-height/
My only problem with this is that there doesn’t seem to be a hidden card so I can’t use it describing stud hands or hands where you don’t know what the opponent have.
When that comes this will be used frequently by me.
Tomas
Well, I fixed it myself. Wasn’t that hard after all. For those that wants to do it, just add a new suit and card to the code, I chose to use
and then add a 00.gif in the cards folder. If you want to have a modified version, just let me know or bugger the author to release one

Hey! Good idea!
I will create a new version to display a “backcard”.
Thanks for the comment and suggestion Tomas!
Just released v1.4 that includes a backcard option.
Current version: 1.5
)
Tested on WordPress 1.5.2 and 2.x.x (I always run the latest version of wordpress so WRP-Cards will always work with the latest and greatest version of wordpress.
well that isn’t true
I run 2.8.4 and I can’t say that I have ever seen this plug-in working with any of the 2.x version
Too bad as it seems no one out there has a card plugin for the 2.8.x wordpress installs.
Hmmm… Not sure why it would not run on your installation. It works fine on my blog and I am currently running 2.8.4 (you can see the version at the bottom of each page).
Email me, maybe we can figure out why it is not working.
Doesn’t work on mine either and it’s 2.8.4 as well
the only problem is it doent show the cards, but show some square to space for the card… i dont kown how to sove it… wp 2.8.6 and tested 2.9.1 doenst too..
im sorry … the error was incorrect address in the wrp-cards.php file… my wp is not in the ROOT site, itīs inside a subfolder called /v21… so… i just needed to change the adress of card-pictures-files in the wrp-cards.php file… it works… thanks… my wp is 2.8.6 just for information…
Great plug-in, good to get something more visual for my poker blog. love it.
Having trouble getting it to work fumseck, when I put the text in like
for example the cards do not show up. Something is happening because the actual text
8c)doesn’t show in the post preview.
Any pointers mate?
oops, should have typed:_8c there and i have no idea how the smiley happened, that was meant to be a ‘:’ not a smiley sorry. lol
Hi,
This is a great little plugin! I work for a poker retailer who used Drupal for their site. I’m trying to write a more exciting one in WordPress. This plugin is saving me trying to put loads of card gifs in my code. Thanks! When I have my site finished I’ll let you know.

Version 1.6 is out:

Version 1.6 now uses WP_PLUGIN_URL to determine the location of the cards.
I’m not at all versed in WordPress. I’ve installed the plug in but the card image isn’t coming up. just a square with a question mark… How would a wordpress novice solve this…
i just cant seem to get this to work it just shows a box with an red X in it. Any ideas? : Ad
i didnt mean to have the
in my last comment
but i dont get why it will work for me here!
Hi Nick,
Did you manage to get the WRP Cards plugin to work with your WordPress blog?
Normally it should be straight forward.
Here are a few suggestions:
1) Make sure the plugin is enabled.
2) Make sure that all the cards are in …\wp-content\plugins\wrp-cards\cards
3) Type the complete url path of a card in a browser and see if it displays in your browser. If it does not, something is wrong with the installation.
Exemple: http://www.warroompoker.com/wp-content/plugins/wrp-cards/cards/2c.gif
Good luck!
I had the same problem. Card images werent shown.. Uninstalled it.(My first plugin was downloaded and installed from WP Plugins site)
Downloaded the plugin from here and uploaded it to WP manually and now everthing seems to be working perfectly….
Ah! that may be the problem! I will check the version that is on the WP Plugins site.
Thanks for the comment PokerPro.
I have updated the svn repository of wrp-cards. Not sure why, but it was still on v1.5.
I also noticed that there was two wrp-cards entries – one under the name wrp-cards and one under the name poker-cards… I have updated both. I am unsure if it is a good idea to delete one of them since some people will be linked to the version I would delete…
I gave up on the plugin as was having the same prob – thanks PokerPro! Working fine now.
I had the same problem; couldn’t make it work when getting in from wordpress but now is working fine after downloading the file from here.
Thanks for solving our problem PokerPro & thanks for a great plugin Fumseck!
Hi I have been able to get the plugin to work on my wordpress site but I just installed bbpress forums and wanted it to work in the posts so players can post bad beats and different hands. Does anyone know how to add something to the bbpress code to access the wrp-cards plugin? Like maybe an action hook?
Thanks,
Mike
This hand
always costs me plenty LOL
Nice plug in
